Sunderland Marine presents Sea Fishing Apprentice of the Year Award

Sunderland Marine are proud to support Whitby and District Fishing School with sponsorship of the Sea Fishing Apprentice of the Year award.

Whitby and District Fishing School, based in Whitby harbour, are committed to ‘keeping industry alive through training’ and offer a range of courses including basic sea survival and first aid, skippers ticket qualifications and safety management.

The Diploma in Sea Fishing provides training and development for young people aged 16 – 19 years, who wish to enter the catching sector of the fishing industry. The course involves lessons on securing a vessel for passage, emergency first aid in response to maritime accidents and medical emergencies, vessel ropework and anchoring and mooring operations and much more.

The Sea Fishing Apprentice of the Year award is given to the student who has demonstrated commitment to their learning and personal development alongside a strong academic performance. Flynn Cornforth was the winner of the 2022-23 award which was presented at the school’s annual general meeting.

Holly Rowley, Deputy Underwriter at Sunderland Marine, attended the Whitby and District Fishing School event and presented the award. Holly commented “It was great to see the talent emerging from the Whitby Fishing school and to celebrate their progress and hard work. Congratulations to Flynn and all the award winners for their impressive achievements over the last 18 months.”
